Multiaxis Machining with Blade Expert 4/5

Exploring Multi-Axis Machining: A Deep Dive into Blade Expert

One of the more complex 5-axis challenges is generating toolpaths for impellers, fans, turbine blades, blisks, and other bladed parts widely used in power generation, energy transfer, and propulsion. Mastercam Blade Expert is a powerful, easy-to-use, custom application designed to generate efficient, smooth, and gouge-free toolpaths for these complex parts.

The first step is setting up the stock model, a representation of the raw material that will be machined. Once the stock model is in place, Blade Expert offers an array of toolpaths to choose from. Whether you opt for a unified toolpath, a flow line, or any other technique, each option requires extra geometry to guide the tool. This is where BladeExpert and PortExpert excel, simplifying the creation of splines and automating the toolpath generation process.

One of the standout features of Blade Expert is its high level of automation. By leveraging the information provided by the model, Blade Expert streamlines the machining process. You no longer need to manually create extra geometry or worry about holder specifications.  Blade Expert also simplifies the workflow by offering default options for two-axis control and linking parameters. However, it’s important to review and adjust these settings based on your specific requirements. By carefully considering each parameter, you can enhance the overall efficiency and quality of the multiaxis machining process.

Simulation and Verification

Before taking your design to the production floor, simulations become an invaluable tool to ensure that everything is running smoothly. Blade Expert offers a simulation feature that allows you to visualize the toolpath and assess its performance. You can adjust the speed and analyze the tool’s movement, gaining confidence in the anticipated results.

Once the simulation is complete and you’re satisfied with the toolpath, Blade Expert offers a stock compare feature. This feature enables you to assess the material removal accurately. If you encounter any issues, Blade Expert provides prompts to make necessary adjustments, such as using a different tool or modifying the stock model.
