Understanding SOLIDWORKS Data Model within 3DEXPERIENCE Platform

When adding SOLIDWORKS files to 3DEXPERIENCE, understanding the terminology differences is critical for user success. When you save SOLIDWORKS files to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, the system performs the following actions.

  1. Uploads your SOLIDWORKS files to a File Collaboration Server (FCS).
  2. Creates database objects in your chosen collaborative space that link to your SOLIDWORKS files.

The 3DEXPERIENCE database objects and the object hierarchy are what is referred to as the SOLIDWORKS data model. The database objects are what users search for, interact with, and open in 3DEXPERIENCE platform apps. The following database objects are created:

For each SOLIDWORKS part, the system hierarchically creates:

    • CAD Family object which functions as the container for all configurations in the file.
    • Physical Product objects for each configuration.
    • 3D Shape objects for each Physical Product object.

For each SOLIDWORKS assembly, the system hierarchically creates:

    • CAD Family object which functions as the container for all configurations in the file.
    • Physical Product objects for each configuration.

For each SOLIDWORKS drawing, the system creates:

    • Drawing object.

You should be familiar with the four database object types listed above when using SOLIDWORKS and the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. Physical Product and Drawing are the most commonly used database objects in the SOLIDWORKS data model.

NOTE: For single-configuration parts and assemblies, CAD Family and 3D Shape objects do not appear in 3DSearch, 3DSpace, or MySession. These objects are visible in some dashboard apps like Bookmark Editor, Product Structure Explore, and Relations. Also, you cannot delete SOLIDWORKS-mastered 3D Shape objects. If you delete the CAD Family or Physical Product object that represents a SOLIDWORKS file or configuration, then the system will automatically delete the corresponding 3D Shape object as well.

You can use the 3DEXPERIENCE Relations app to visualize and better understand the hierarchy of the SOLIDWORKS data model. See the images below for an example:
