Troubleshooting PDM Tasks

The SOLIDWORKS PDM Tasks feature in the Administration tool lets you configure, run, and monitor tasks that you perform frequently on SOLIDWORKS PDM files either manually or automatically through a workflow transition. If PDM ever fails to complete a task, there are a variety of troubleshooting steps to resolve the behavior that will be covered in this guide.

There are some differences between SOLIDWORKS PDM Standard and PDM Professional licenses.

    • PDM Standard (2018 and beyond) contains a single task to convert drawings to PDF. Previous versions did not include any task capability.
    • PDM Professional PDM includes access to many more customizable options related to tasks as well as the ability to convert SOLIDWORKS files to nearly any file type available inside of SOLIDWORKS, such as stp, igs, x_t, or dwg, print SOLIDWORKS files automatically, convert Microsoft office documents, or even create your own customized add-in and tasks.

General Troubleshooting Steps

    • Review the PDM Tasks List for any failed or pending tasks. The list contains details such as error messages and error codes to help technical support troubleshoot the behavior.
    • Review the Windows Application and System event logs for related error messages. You can find this in Windows search > Event Viewer, then expand Windows Logs and click on Applications.
    • (PDM Professional) Ensure the latest version of SOLIDWORKS is selected as the in the Advanced Scripting Options menu (shown below).
    • (PDM Professional) Reset the SOLIDWORKS PDM Task Script (shown below).

How to Set the SOLIDWORKS Version to Run a Task

  1. Launch the SOLIDWORKS PDM Administration tool.
  2. Expand Tasks > [task’s name] > Output File Details > Advanced Scripting Options.
  3. From the SOLIDWORKS version to use dropdown, select either Default (current version of the task script) or a specific version of SOLIDWORKS to use when running the task. Make sure the selected version is NOT a future version of SOLIDWORKS compared to PDM. Only installed versions will be displayed. Click OK to close the dialog and then close the task.
