SOLIDWORKS PDM Enter a Valid Account for this Resource

PDM Enter a Valid Account for this Resource

When using the View Setup utility to create a PDM local vault view, the first step is to select or add the name of the PDM Archive Server hosting the vault for which you want to attach. If your currently logged in Windows user is not listed in attach access on the Archive Server, then you will encounter a security screen requesting to “Enter a valid account for this resource.” This is not a SOLIDWORKS PDM vault login, but rather a Windows authentication login to allow the user to attach to the PDM Archive Server.

Note, this is a one-time authentication that is only needed to allow the View Setup utility to move to the next step, it does not store the login information and does not need to be entered again unless the view is removed and needs to be added again.

The information below will help you and your IT group understand which Windows credentials to enter based on how your environment is configured.

Which “resource” does it mean and which account should be used?

The “resource” in this case is the Archive Server and a valid account is a Windows User account that has been authorized to “attach” to this Archive Server.

These authorized Windows Users are controlled un the SOLIDWORKS PDM Archive Server Configuration utility found on the PDM Archive Server under Tools > Default Settings, then on the Security tab in the Attach Access section.

Active Directory Controller

If your organization has a domain setup with an Active Directory controller, then your IT group may have already added your domain account or a domain group that you belong, in which case you are immediately authorized to “Attach” and create a new vault viewIf this is the case, then you won’t be prompted with the request to “Enter a valid account for this resource, since your current Windows Login is already authenticated and valid to use for creating the vault view.

Local Windows Accounts

If your organization is using local Windows accounts, then this automatic authentication won’t take place, so you will need to provide a Windows login name and password for an account that has been added to the “Attach access” box.

By default, the “BUILTIN\Administrators”, “BUILTIN\Power Users” and “BUILTIN\Uses” groups will always be present here. If your organization doesn’t use Active Directory, or if you aren’t sure what users or groups have attach access, add the Windows login name and password for ANY Windows user account on the Windows Server hosting the Archive Server software.

You may need to request your IT department to either set up a user account on the server for this purpose, or they can enter this login information for you.
