SOLIDWORKS PDM Child Reference State Conditions

Starting with SOLIDWORKS PDM 2020, workflow transitions can be defined with child reference state conditions to prevent parent files from transitioning before all requirements are met. For example, a parent assembly cannot be transitioned through Submit for Approval before referenced child parts and sub-assemblies are in the Approved state. This ensures the assembly and drawing can be rebuilt and updated to reflect all part and sub-assembly changes before the assembly is transitioned for approval.

How to Define Child Reference State Conditions

The example below is an example of applying the condition to a default PDM vault setup and CAD workflow named Default Workflow. The goal is for all child files to be in the Approved state prior to the parent assembly being able to transition through Submit for Approval.

SOLIDWORKS PDM Administration tool > Workflows > Default Workflow

To prevent the parent assembly from transitioning through Submit for Approval, the properties of the transition need modified to include a condition.

Default Workflow > Submit for Approval

Click the Conditions tab and enter the condition parameters.

    • Variable: Child Reference State
    • Comparison: Text Equal To
    • Value: Default Workflow.Approved

Note under the Configuration/Path column, wildcards can be applied along with specifying a file name, etc. For example “%.sldprt” could be added to limit this condition to just SOLIDWORKS part files (.sldprt). For this example, the Configuration/Path field will be left blank to apply the condition to all child reference files.

Click OK to close the transition properties dialog and then click Save to save the workflow.

In PDM File Explorer, test the condition by transitioning an assembly that has child references that are not in the Approved state. The example assembly below along with two child references are in state Under Editing while all other references are in Approved.

SOLIDWORKS PDM Child Reference State Conditions

When transitioning the assembly or the child references in Under Editing when they do not meet the condition:

    • Parent assembly should be blocked with the warning Child references do not meet state conditions. The assembly cannot proceed until the child references meet the condition.
    • Child references should display the warning Parent file does not meet child reference state conditions. This is just a warning that does not prevent the child reference from being transitioned.

Note, other child references that do meet the condition of being in the Approved state may still display other warnings, such as a general warning that the file being transitioned is simply in another state. These and other warnings help PDM users understand the current workflow states prior to deciding to transition the files.
