SOLIDWORKS PDM BOM What's The Difference Between As Built and Latest

When viewing the bill of material (BOM) tab in SOLIDWORKS PDM, the BOM can be display As Built or Latest. The difference between these two options is the assembly structure when it was checked in (As Built) compared to the current structure (Latest) of the references.

The As Built option will show the BOM for a referenced file at the time that the assembly is checked in while the Latest option shows the BOM for a referenced assembly with the latest versions of all referenced files. If an assembly is checked out and changes are made, and then the assembly is checked back into the vault, PDM will update the references and the BOM will display the latest changes.

The example below should help clarify these options to help make sure PDM users are viewing the desired BOM.

ParentAssembly.SLDASM contains SubAssembly.SLDASM, which contains SubAssembly-Part1.SLDPRT.

SubAssembly.SLDASM is checked out and modified to include a new part SubAssembly-Part2.SLDPRT. The subassembly is then checked back into the vault and the version increases from 2 to 3. Note, at this time, ParentAssembly.SLDASM has neither been checked out nor modified. It is currently in the vault as it was originally built with SubAssembly.SLDASM containing only one part file reference.

Once SubAssembly.SLDASM is checked back into the vault, we can see the difference between As Built and Latest while selecting ParentAssembly.SLDASM. Note SubAssembly-Part2.SLDPRT is displayed in Latest and now As Built, since it was added after ParentAssembly.SLDASM was last checked into PDM.

The next time ParentAssembly.SLDASM is checked into PDM, the As Built option will display SubAssembly-Part2.SLDPRT, assuming SubAssembly.SLDASM still contains that part as a reference.
