SOLIDWORKS Composer Backup Options

Enabling the SOLIDWORKS Composer AutoSave options can help reduce lost data in the event of computer behavior which results in unexpected closure of the software. Note, this option is turned off by default.

SOLIDWORKS Composer > File > Preferences > (the Application Preferences dialog box opens) > click the Advanced Settings category. To show the AutoSave options, ensure the ‘Show Advanced Properties Only’ button is turned off (not pressed), as shown in the image below.

Enable AutoSave and set the AutoSaveInterval (minutes).

Enable AutoSaveVersioning and set the AutoSaveVersioningMaxNumberOfFiles.

SOLIDWORKS Composer Backup Options (1)

Auto Save

  1. Automatically backs up the currently open Composer files in a backup folder, at the interval specified by the AutoSaveInterval setting.

The backup folder named Bak is located in the User folder specified in the Application Paths page. The default location is C:\Users\<username>\Documents\SOLIDWORKSComposer\User

Note: The backup folder is not created in the user’s folder until the AutoSave option is enabled and at least one interval has been reached.

Auto Save Interval

Specifies the interval, in minutes, at which the currently open Composer files are to be backed up in the backup folder.

Auto Save Versioning

Allows versioning by creating an additional backup version of the currently open Composer files in the Bak folder, at the interval specified by the AutoSaveInterval setting.

In this case, for a given Composer file, backup versions are saved in a dedicated folder in the User\Bak folder. The file name format is filename_YYYYMMDD_HHMM (current year, month, day, hour, minute).

How to Restore Deleted SOLIDWORKS PDM Users

Clear this option if you want the new backup to overwrite the previous one.

SOLIDWORKS Composer Backup Options (4)

Auto Save Versioning max Number of Files

When AutoSaveVersioning is selected, specifies the maximum number of backup files to keep. The higher the number, the more disk space will be required.

NOTE: You must enter a value between 1 and 100.

Testing Auto Save

To test your AutoSave option settings, open a file in Composer and wait for the interval time (minutes) to pass, and then check the Bak folder to verify backup file(s) are being added as expected.
