SOLIDWORKS Backup and Recovery System Options

SOLIDWORKS Backup and Recovery System Options

SOLIDWORKS has built-in auto-recover and backup options in System Options to keep your designs safe or to use if you simply want to start from a previous spot in your design. There is also an option to set a reminder to save files frequently to help make sure you’re saving early and often.

These settings can be found in Tools > Options > System Options > Backup/Recover

1 SOLIDWORKS Auto-Recover Options

Auto-Recover has options to set a time frequency for saving files for your current document and the location that these files are saved. A .SWAR file (SOLIDWORKS auto-recovery) is saved to the location. If the system experiences an unexpected closure, the next time SOLIDWORKS is opened, the task pane displays the auto-recovered file(s) with options to open those files.

Note, the next time you save your opened file, the system automatically clears out the auto-recovery file to free up space.

2 SOLIDWORKS Backup Options

Backup has options to save multiple backup copies per file up to a maximum of 10 backups per file as well as where to save the backup files. Each time you save in SOLIDWORKS, the system creates a backup of your file. To manage the backup directory’s space, you can also set backup files to be deleted automatically after a specific number of days.

3 SOLIDWORKS Save Reminder Options

Another useful system option to help protect your designs is to set a save reminder so the system displays a warning if the file you’re working on has not been saved for a specific number of minutes.

Tools > Options > System Options > Messages/Errors/Warnings, Notifications

The auto-recover, backup, and save warning will help ensure you don’t lose valuable design time by recreating files in the event of any unexpected system behavior.
