Selecting Child References Automatically in PDM

By default, when SOLIDWORKS PDM transition completes a state change operation on a file, all reference files are also selected to transition automatically.

Users can manually de-select files to exclude them from the transition. This default functionality can be turned off in PDM settings for specific users or groups to avoid performing unwanted transitions on files. With the option off, users will have to select which files will accompany the transitioning files through the state change.

Where to Change the Setting

Log into the SOLIDWORKS PDM Administration tool as the admin or a user who can administrate other users.

SOLIDWORKS PDM Administration Tool > Users and Group Management > select a User or Group and right-click > Settings > Reference Dialog. De-select the Miscellaneous option ‘Select child references during state change.’ Click OK to close the settings.

NOTE, prior to PDM 2019, the wording of the option was ‘Do not mark referenced files when changing state.’ The functionality was the same.

With the option turned off, when users perform a transition, the child references are not selected by default except for any file marked as a drawing node. The SOLIDWORKS drawing ‘Light.SLDDRW’ is a drawing node of the assembly ‘Light.SLDASM, so the drawing is selected automatically.

The optionSelect references that are defined as drawing nodes during state change’ can also be used to automatically select certain file types to transition as a reference. To learn more about drawing nodes, read are guide What is a Drawing Node?

Depending on your users’ needs, the options above may provide more flexibility when working with child references within the vault.
