How to set the base scale when exporting DXF/DXG Drawings from SOLIDWORKS

To avoid incorrect dimensions when exporting SOLIDWORKS drawings to DXF/DWG file format, the export scale factor needs to be taken into consideration. When SOLIDWORKS drawings are exported to DXF/DWG format, the drawing views and sheet formats are converted using a single scale factor. If the SOLIDWORKS drawing views contain different scaling factors, then some of them will be exported with dimension values either too small or too large depending on the scale factor selected when exporting.

NOTE: Changing the scale in a SOLIDWORKS drawing view does not affect the actual dimensions of the part or assembly shown in the view as they are parametrically linked to the actual part or assembly file. Changing the scale only changes the size of the view itself and how the entities are exported.

In the SOLIDWORKS save-as dialog or in Tools > Options > System Options tab > Export > DXF/DWG from the dropdown menu, the ‘Scale output 1:1’ options can be set. The ‘Base Scale’ is used to determine which scale factor is used when exporting all views of a drawing.

For example, selecting the base scale of 1:2 will export the drawing views by increasing them by two times (2:1), so the views with scale of 1:2 end up with 1:1 geometry when output to DXF/DWG. This is the correct option for views set with a scale of 1:2. However, any views set to a different scale, 1:4 for example, will export incorrect dimension values that are double, since those views will also be increased by the same 2:1 scaling factor. See the examples below for clarification.

The dropdown menu for base scale lists all scale factors found in the sheet format and in all views present in the drawing, showing the number of views using the same scale.

If the drawing does not contain any views, then only the sheet scale will be displayed as shown below. Once more views are added, the list will display those scaling factors and counts.

When the 1:1 scale output is enabled and the option ‘Warn me if enabled’ is selected, then a warning will be displayed by SOLIDWORKS when different scales exist in the drawing, indicating that some items may appear out of scale and dimension incorrectly in the DXF/DWG file.

When using the same base scale as the view scale, the dimensions will export and measure correctly. Views with a different scale will be multiplied accordingly and the dimensions will be incorrect when measured in the DXF/DWG file as shown below.

Example #1 SOLIDWORKS Drawing:

DXF file opened and measured

    • View scale 1:1 dimensions are CORRECT
    • View scale 1:2 dimensions are INCORRECT (exported to ½ scale)

Example #2 SOLIDWORKS Drawing:

Sheet Scale 1:1

View Scale: 1:1 and 1:2

Export base scale set to 1:2

DXF file opened and measured

    • View scale 1:1 dimensions are INCORRECT (increased by 2:1)
    • View scale 1:2 dimensions are CORRECT.

Best Practices

    • Apply the same scale to all views of a drawing being exported to DXF/DWG.
    • When setting the base scale, select a view scale as the base scale for exporting. This will help avoid mistakes where views were placed that do not match the sheet scale.
