How to Resolve The Current SOLIDWORKS Task Add-in is Unsupported

When selecting a file in a PDM vault, users may receive a warning indicating that the current SOLIDWORKS Task add-in version is unsupported. This behavior may occur after upgrading the PDM server and/or client.

Even if the task add-ins appear upgraded in the Administration tool, the client-side add-in may be outdated or corrupted and need recached locally. The SOLIDWORKS PDM Administration tool manages task add-ins at the vault level, but clients cache their own local copies on log in.

Verify the Task Add-in Version (Client Side)

The task add-in used by the PDM client machine must match the server version. You can verify this using the Task Host Configuration tool.

  1. In the Windows system tray, right-click the SOLIDWORKS PDM icon (blue/white icon) then select the Task Host Configuration

  1. In the Task Host Configuration window:
    1. Select the appropriate vault from the top-right dropdown.
    2. Confirm the task add-in is enabled under ‘Permit’.

Review the version number format: YYSSBBBB

    1. YY = Year
    2. SS = Service Pack (SP)
    3. BBBB = Build Number

If the version does not match the server, the add-in must be updated/cached locally on the client.

Update Task Add-ins (If Required)

If the task add-in is not current in the administration tool:

Clear the Local PDM Plugin Cache

A very common cause of this warning is a corrupted plugin cache on the client machine.

  1. Log out then Exit

    1. Open File Explorer and enable Hidden Items (View > Show > Hidden Items).
    2. Navigate to: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\SolidWorks\SOLIDWORKS PDM
        • Locate the Plugins folder
        • Rename it to: Plugins_OLD

  1. Log back into PDM and test the behavior to confirm the warning no longer appears.

Summary

This behavior is almost always caused by one of the following:

      • Client using an outdated task add-in version
      • Corrupted local plugin cache
      • Mismatch between server and client add-in versions

Clearing the plugin cache forces the client to download a fresh, correct version from the vault, resolving the behavior in most cases.
