How to Find Windows Event Logs for Technical Support

When troubleshooting SOLIDWORKS products or any other software issues, Windows Event Logs can provide valuable information for identifying the root cause of a problem. In particular, the Application and System logs often contain details about software errors, crashes, installation problems, and operating system events that can assist technical support during an investigation.

What is the Application Log?

The Application log contains events generated by software installed on the computer. For SOLIDWORKS products, this log can help identify:

      • Installation failures or errors
      • Application crashes
      • Notification or add-in issues
      • Unexpected program behavior
      • Other software-related errors

What is the System Log?

The System log contains events generated by Windows and system-level services. These events may include:

      • Hardware and driver issues
      • Operating system errors and warnings
      • Service failures
      • Unexpected shutdowns or restarts
      • Network-related issues

For SOLIDWORKS products, the System log can help determine whether a problem originates from the operating system, hardware, or another system component rather than the SOLIDWORKS software itself.

When Should Event Logs Be Collected?

The MLC CAD Systems support team may request Windows Event Logs when investigating SOLIDWORKS product issues. Providing these logs can help identify errors and reduce troubleshooting.

Sending the Logs to Technical Support

After saving both the Application and System logs, attach the resulting .evtx files to your support case email reply or upload them to our secure share site Send-A-File. If you upload the logs, please reply to the case email to notify the technical support expert assign to your case so they can retrieve the files.

Providing these logs along with a detailed description of the issue, screenshots, and any error messages can significantly reduce troubleshooting time and help us resolve any unexpected behavior more quickly.
