How to Control Get Version Commands
How to Control Get Version Commands in PDM
The Get Version and Get commands in PDM allows users to choose and cache older versions of files. PDM Administration contains settings to control user/group access to retrieve previous versions of files or always work with the latest version of files depending on if they are working in File Explorer or SOLIDWORKS Add-in. Let’s take a quick look at configuring the Get command options.
Turning the Get Version and Get command on/off
The setting which controls the Get commands can be found in the Administration tool for User or Group under Settings > Reference Dialog > Check out and version access controls, ‘Always work with latest version of files.’
With this option turned OFF, users will be able to retrieve versions in the following areas:
File Explorer: Get Version available in the Actions menu when selecting any file.
History Dialog: Get icon is available (not greyed out) when selecting a file version.
SOLIDWORKS PDM Add-in: Get Version icon is available (not greyed out) when selecting a file.
When ‘Always work with latest version of files’ is turned ON, an additional option becomes available, ‘Enable the get version command in SOLIDWORKS add-in.’
Turning this option ON will remove the Get Version command from File Explorer and the Get command from the History dialog, though users with SOLIDWORKS access will still be able to access Get Version from within the SOLIDWORKS PDM Add-in only.
File Explorer: Get Version is not available in the Actions menu.
History Dialog: Get icon is greyed out and not available.
SOLIDWORKS PDM Add-in: Get Version is still available for SOLIDWORKS users.
If ‘Always work with latest version of files’ is turned ON and ‘Enable the get version command in SOLIDWORKS Add-in’ is turned OFF, then all users will always work with the latest version of all files and no options to retrieve previous version will be available in neither File Explorer nor SOLIDWORKS Add-in.
Now that you know how to activate the command, for whom should it be activated?
Most users in Production / Manufacturing (PDM Viewers Contributors) have the Get Version command disabled to avoid inadvertent errors using outdated information, though admins and engineers who are designing product or creating documents often need Get Version command activated to troubleshoot or investigate throughout the process.
