How to Clear Local Cache in a SOLIDWORKS PDM Local Vault View and Why

When PDM users retrieve a file from the vault, a copy is placed (saved) in the local vault view on the local hard drive. This folder serves as a cache area. The next time the user accesses the same file, SOLIDWORKS PDM looks for the file in the local vault view. If the file exists and has the correct version, SOLIDWORKS PDM does not retrieve vault from the file vault again.

Clearing the local cache removes all files that are not checked out from the working folder and are not referenced by a file that is checked out, though removing a file from the local cache does not affect the file in the vault.

The system copies files to the local cache when users:

    • Select a file and open the Preview tab.
    • Request the file by selecting Check out, Get Versions, or Get Latest Version.
    • Drag a SOLIDWORKS Toolbox part into an assembly (when SOLIDWORKS PDM is managing the Toolbox library).
    • Your PDM system administrator can also specify folders where the software refreshes the local cache when users log in to SOLIDWORKS PDM by setting cache options automatically.

The PDM Version tab displays the file version in your local cache folder. It also displays a warning when you do not have the latest version of the file locally.

NOTE: When a user adds a file to the local vault view by creating or copying a file, it is only present in your local cache. Although information about the file is entered into the vault database, it is not available to other users until the file is checked into the vault.

Why Clear the Local Cache?

Keeping a large number of files cached locally can impact performance when accessing files from the local vault view as the system must check the local version of each cached file that is being accessed. Files that are no longer being used should be removed from the local cache except for SOLIDWORKS Toolbox, library folders, and other commonly used files. For commonly used library files, performance can actually be improved by keeping the files cached locally to avoid having the system copy them locally every time they are used.

Clear Local Cache Automatically

SOLIDWORKS PDM local cache options can be configured by user or group in the Administration tool to either ‘Clear cache during log out’ or ‘Refresh cache during log in’ for designated folders. Although they appear to be very similar, both options have major differences between them and when they should be applied.
